I&M Foundation seeks to promote environmental education and implement practical conservation initiatives by working with schools, environmental groups, communities and churches. Nguzo Africa, one of the Foundation’s implementing partners, provides opportunities for Kenyans to value, and acquire a deeper understanding and take initiatives in restoring of the environment in Narok County.
The environmental education programme entails training and practically involving young learners as well as their parents in understanding the local ecosystem and sustainable management of natural resources. Olashapani Girls secondary school is one of Nguzo Africa’s case studies whereby the school’s environmental club has been a leading champion in tree planning and growing in the county.
Uniquely, the school has adopted an approach whereby each student has to plant and nurture trees during their schooling period – leading to the students having ‘pet- trees’. Remarkably, the project has garnered increased buy-in and ownership of by target beneficiaries and other stakeholders with increased participation of parents and young learners in environmental conservation initiatives.
